One of the things that really seems to sabotage my efforts at making certain positive changes in my life is the fact that I always tend to try to make ALL the changes at once.  I get on kicks, probably about every 3 months or so, when I decide “ok, I am going to be better about, sticking to our budget, AND planning the meals for each week, AND following up with customers and clients within 24 hours of a message, AND eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day”…etc, etc, etc.  The list goes on interminably!!!

In fact, sometimes I spend so much time and effort on THE LIST, that I then become so overwhelmed that I become paralyzed from starting ANYTHING on the list at all! And that…is seriously disconcerting!

This is why I have instituted for myself this year a 12 in 12 challenge.  If you recall my blog post back at the end of November, I discussed habits.  And to truly make a lasting change, or create a habit, we have to stick to the behavior for at least 21 – 30 days (preferably 30).

So, with that in mind, the 12 in 12 challenge consists of coming up with 12 positive changes we want to institute in our lives or lives of our family, and then to allocate them each to a month of this year, 2012.  So, by the end of the year, we are… awesome!  Now, I say “we” and “our” because I am trying to subtly encourage/suggest/hope that you will all join me!

No matter how many bite size pieces we break “change” into, it is still a challenge;  And for me, I really like to be encouraged when I am facing something challenging, and I am often much more successful when I have both encouragement and accountability.  I also know that this is not just true of myself, but of most folks.  So, what do you think?

Clearly, we are already nine days into January, so to get a full 12 new habits, we’ll have to finish off January’s goal while starting February’s…2 at once…ahhh!  But I know it is doable.  Also, it is not necessary to know all 12 up front.  Just think of one to start with, and then go from there.

Just to show you how neurotic I am.  I’m having a fit trying to decide which change goes first…pro’s and con’s list, ranking which should come before the next to make the next easier, what really has to happen earlier in year and what can wait, etc.  Hey, we all have our issues…don’t judge me J.

Okay, so rubber hits the road time…

My new positive activity that I will be working on making a habit this month (and then continuing with indefinitely) is:

To plan the following weeks meals each Saturday (taking into account sport, activity, work schedules, eating out, and other stuff!)

So, technically, I could procrastinate my planning until this next Saturday, but since I have already waited until January 9th to get on the ball this year (since my birthday is on January 7th, the holidays actually just ended J), I suppose I’ll plan this week out TODAY!!!

Follow me on Twitter @JulieSatterfeal.  If you are going for the 12 in 12 challenge with me then send me a tweet with the positive change you are making for January 2012!  Can’t wait to see…and steal y’all’s ideas for myself too!

Here’s to a fantastic year!  Cheers!  Julie
