This is the time of year when I really start breaking out the smoothies again.  I guess because they are such a cool and refreshing treat to me once it starts to warm up.  Of course they are delicious any time of year, but I seem to gravitate to them more often in the Summer especially.

Here is an excerpt from a previous post about smoothies, and ironically enough I am again drinking this particular smoothie as I write this post!

I am having a tasty shake that I thought I would share.  Quick, easy, and on the go!  Also, one of the secrets to a great smoothie is frozen fruit.  I MUCH prefer the smoothie if all fruit involved has been frozen first.  It keeps the shake good and cold, without watering it down like too much ice can do.

Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

2 scoops Arbonne Essentials Vanilla Protein Shake

8 oz. Almond Milk or regular milk (I used vanilla flavored…yum)

½ a frozen banana

1 tablespoon peanut butter

4-6 ice cubes

Blend and Enjoy!  I use the Magic Bullet, and LOVE it.  It is so convenient with almost no cleanup…just the blade and the cup from which you drink.

I am also NOT a fan of banana flavored things, although I do like bananas, but as I learned from my very awesome sister-in-law Brianna, the frozen banana adds great integrity and sweetness to a smoothie.  Most of the time I don’t even taste any particular banana flavor.

My point being, don’t discount the frozen banana too soon!

As I have also mentioned TONS of times, I am a huge fan of food.  So the idea of drinking just smoothies or mostly smoothies all the time sounds perfectly terrible.  And as a dietitian, I don’t recommend it either.  Not because you would be unable to get proper nutrients (because you could if done really well), but because you won’t stick to it.  And ultimately it will just be another thing to stress you out for no good reason.

Food is too important in so many different aspects of our lives, socially, physically, psychologically, emotionally, blah, blah, blah…Don’t relegate yourselves to drinking all your meals if you don’t have to.

But, they can be a really healthy, easy, quick, and delicious way to supplement your diet when you are in a hurry, hungry, don’t feel like eating your fruit but know you need to get some in, can’t eat enough protein after a workout but know you need it, etceteras!

So, in the same theme from which I always profess nutrition and wellness advice, enjoy smoothies in the right balance in your life!  Try some new recipes, and see if you discover a fresh favorite.

Happy Spring…it is finally warm in Huntsville Alabama!
